Answer:
There are loads of sites and some of them are cons as you would see if you were looking at this section frequently. Go for one of the main sites like Kayak.com or travelsuppermarket.com or Expedia. When you find a flight with the right price and itinerary check with the airline's own website to see if the price is good. Book as far in advance as you can. Airlines release their best prices about ten months in advance and the prices go up the closer you get to departure date. Check the proposed itinerary carefully. Many of the cheapest offerings fly by indirect routings with multiple changes and often anti social hours for the flights. Make sure the whole package suits before you buy. BA have some good offers on at the moment and they fly direct from London to both California and Florida

One thing to remember is everyone has a different idea on what is "cheap".....and many of those well-known "major" travel sites are owned by the same company, which means normally not much differences in their prices. And the problem with just checking those sites only, is you might miss out on great deals that may be available on another travel site! You have to think of these online travel sites like grocery stores or gas stations - they all sell the same thing, the only difference is their price. SO - Why pay more for the same thing the other guys are selling???

This short article explains how to go about finding cheap flights and includes links to price comparison engines (some comparing prices from 600 airlines + expedia, opodo etc), plus other useful links like companies handling spare seats on holiday planes etc. http://inblighty.com/trekbooks/howtofind_travelbargains.html Hope this helps In response to Ian M's valid point about commission: I also bought a cheap ticket through Iceland Air in 2006 and knew they could be good value for money so I checked during my research that as a minimum they would be identified by the comparison site I recommended (They Were). I also compared them on a number of flights to NY and was surprised to find that Iceland Air no longer appeared particularly competitive, otherwise I would have highlighted them separately in my article. I’ve now done a follow up with these airlines and my favourite comparison site using random dates of 14-21 Aug: Iceland Air flight London Heathrow – Reyjavik booking through Iceland Air £271; booking Iceland Air flight through Expedia (via favourite comparison site) £259.35. Air Transat Gatwick to Toronto (they only fly to Canada) £606, comparison engine/Opodo £634.30 same flight (but note the comparison engine has done most of your searching for you covering most airlines saving you hours of checking, AND provides the link to Air Transat) They may not pay commission but BOTH Iceland Air, and Air Transat homepage links were provided on the search page under “Need Alternatives”. So for the amount of time most people put into checking a good comparison engine is likely to provide the best price they are likely to find. For those who spend hours checking – it provides a phenomenal reduction in the amount of websites you have to visit, and then provides all the links on the same page for the remaining sites you might want to try.
