What does the X stand for in LAX (the airport)?

Every airport today has a unique three-letter identifier to streamline the process of tracking the millions of items of airport data transmitted daily, including flight plans and weather reports. Before the 1930s, existing airports used a two-letter abbreviation based on the weather station at the airports. So, at that time, LA served as the designation for Los Angeles International Airport. But, with the rapid growth in the aviation industry, the designations expanded to three letters, and LA became LAX. The letter X does not otherwise have any specific meaning in this identifier.

The airport that serves Hartford Conn is in Windsor Lockes. Naturally it's identifier is BDL. Taft, California is L17. X was just as arbitrarily chosen for the third letter identifier for what was Mines Field back in the '40s. What's in a name really? (Actually it was named after some Lt. Eugene Bradley after he dug a hole in the ground with his P-40.)

The X alone doesn't mean anything. everyone knows what LAX means, just as most know that PDX means Portland and IAH means Houston. Additionally, anything that starts with a "Y" means Canada. How do they get Y out of Canada? There is a famous song by Rush called YYZ, which is Toronto's airport.

LAX is just a three letter code. My local airport (Regina International) has the code of YQR. X means nothing.

x stands for intersection or crossing i believe, so los angeles crossing or intersection
