  • Answer:

if you want to play amateur league o start out with and are fit, no. Wait to pre-season and go to your local club. Some clubs have try outs before Christmas- November. You will need to tell them you haven't played. They have various grades. Fitness and agility are important. As for skills, get some training DVDs and a book. Find some mates who can play to teach you to kick, mark etc. This is mainly practice. Bouncing it is tricky. You need to get your hands on a ball and handle it. SANFL reserves are a pretty high level and if you got there you would be doing well. local clubs should be happy to teach you- if not inquire elsewhere because fit young guys dont grow on trees.

18 isn't too old to start, SANFL reserves is still a pretty good level mate, maybe aim for something a bit more obtainable for a start, just practice and listen to the coaches.

Matty Egan of the Geelong Cats started playing footy at 18, and he made the AFL and he was a very decent player. If you have the commitment and the desire to make the level you want then of course you can. Just have to work hard and listen to any advice you've been given. Oh and stamina and speed in footy is really important.

Just go for it mate. You say you are athletic and have good pace and everything. The transition should be dealt with well then, those are main factors of the game. If you really want to play at SANFL reserves, then go for it. You will do great. Goodluck, and I hope everything works out well for you. :)

Attitude helps enormously with doing anything,so changing codes i is possible as long as you are seriously considering doing so.Learning to kick, mark and handball is fairly easy if you get a good coach and really work on these skills. So the short answer is of course you can just get out and give it a go.
