Do you like AFL or NRL?

Would anyone like to tell the NRL supporters that there is more sport in Melbourne than just AFL?

  • Ive been told like 3-4 times by NRL supporters that the reason why we get so many people to our games is because this is the only sport we have to go and watch. Would anyone like to ...show more

  • Answer:

As a matter of fact, Melbourne has three international sporting events in the next week: International Rules, Rugby World Cup Qualifier and the Melbourne Cup. On top of that, Melbourne Victory, our team in the A-League, has the highest attendances of any Australian soccer team, and has higher average attendances than all but one of the NRL teams! So take that rugby people! I wouldn't worry about them too much anyway mate, they're obsessed with hating our sport rather than watching their own! EDIT: And as Smash mentioned, we have the Grand Prix, Phillip Island has the Moto GP, and we have the Australian Open! Take that Sydney!

Our crowds are at a lull for the last two years, yes, but who really cares when you go to watch your team play? I could go to a game where it would only be myself there yet still have a good time. And when talking about crowd attendances, It helps having a game 50 years older then another and made in Australia. We're like you, have a main sport and minor sports around it. We also have Soccer, Bball, AFL, Union and Cricket. This is more turning into a City V City battle, and it also helps to realise that with summer upon us, our beautiful Manly and Bondi Beaches are packed while your ...what's a famous Melbourne Beach?... is empty. Beaches have nothing to do with this of course, yet I'm stating a point. You seemed to not do what suprisingly most of the AFL section does do, and not bag us. For that and making a reasonable argument, I won't flame you.

This is the week Melbourne have the race that stops the nation so that speaks for itself. Also why did they have Aussie Rules as a demonstration sport at the Sydney Olympic and not NRL.

I know Melbourne has a football team, the Melbourne Victory, a good NRL team, the Melbourne Storm, some Horse Racing carnival (I hate Horse Racing), the F1 Grand Prix that Kennett nicked from the West Victorians and the Australian Open Tennis. The Tennis is fantastic. The football's good, The Rugby League is awesome. The rest is like watching paint dry. I also know you have kick and giggle, or backyard ballet. Stupid Mexican game. It still doesn't stop Melbourne from being a boring ugly city and isn't a patch on Sydney. To quote Juan Antonio Samaranch "And the winner is Sydney"
