Chick's Saddlery has always been good to me. I would recommend getting a trainer that can help you through this initial phase and help you work with your horse. The first few months definitely take some hand-holding. There are some knowledgable people on this board, but we can't possibly tell you everything you need to know. A real, live, experienced horse person to be your pal is what you need! Good luck!

Ask them!!!! And before you go out and buy one or even get one for free, you ought to have taken lots of lessons, and be able to foot big vet bill(s). The horse is the cheapest item... the board bills, shoeings, and vet bills will kill ya, hon.

a great place to get horse supplies is doversaddlery.com you can have them send you a catalog. they have everything you could need or want for you and your horse. are you going to be riding english or western? you would have to look at another website for western gear. okay, let's see a list of what you are going to need: water and feed buckets, curry comb, brushes, hoof pick, mane and tail comb, fly spray, hoof dressing, clippers, halter (although, that should be supplied from whom you are getting the horse from), lead rope, blankets, shampoo & conditioner (that can be from anywhere), saddle pads, girth, leg wraps, saddle, bridle, bit. then as you have the horse for awhile you'll get to know what else you need. plus, the people at the barn where you are going to be boarding him/her should be able to let you know what you might be missing. look for a good vet and a very good ferrier.

County Supply usually has a lot of different items for VERY good prices. I can't remember the website, but I'm sure it would come up if you googled it. Otherwise, tack sales and ebay are great spots to find gently used items for fantastic prices. Good luck!

hey there, i'm not sure where you live, but if you have a State Line Tack catalogue, they have good equipment and at decent prices. If you are boarding your horse at a barn that offers full board, you need to ask exactly what they provide. If they only provide food and hay, you will need to provide worming, making sure your horse is up to date on his shots and coggins test, you will need a farrier to trim your horses feet about every 4-6 weeks, and depending how much riding you do and the terrain you're on, you might need to have shoes put on him. You will need a halter and lead rope, and i would get my own buckets for water and food. What kind of riding are you going to be doing?

That's a question (about feed and water buckets) your boarding stable will have to answer. Usually the buckerts come with the stall .... Call 1-800-JEFFERS and ask for a catalog. They have cool prices and don't charge shipping if your order is over $50. You'll need a good saddle, pad, bridle and need to make sure you get the bit the horse is used to and that the saddle fits. You need a halter, lead line (I'd have spares), dewormer, grooming tools, a basket to hold them, and first aid supplies. You'll need suplements, mineral block, hoof dressing, fly spray, bathing items. Saddle soap and oil are good to have as well. Will the stable provide desanding agents? If not, get some. And your horse may need certain supplements depending upon the horse. Fly mask? winter blanket? And don't forget the horse treats ...
