They aren't dead, it's just a lot slower with a crappy economy still on us. The construction side of the trades took a bigger hit than the service side. A few years back I could look around Seattle from the roof of a building downtown and count up to 15 cranes in the skyline putting buildings up. After the economy took a hit you were lucky to count 5 at a given time. Companies weren't as eager to spend money on new construciton. The service side did slow down a bit but not as drastically as drastically and not for every trade. People still have plumbing issues, electrical issues, and HVAC issues on existing structures; the problem is that everyone scrambles for the service calls once the rest of the work slows down. HVAC work probably was hit the easiest with the crunch, at least form what I saw. The service plumbers for the company I work for have gone through mandatory temporary layoffs routinely for short periods the last few years depending on work that was availble. The HVAC service side didn't get hit like that until this year and it was seasonal. Meaning when the weather was milder and not extremely warm or cold that's when it slowed down and they conducted rolling layoffs. The company brought the majority of mechanics back once work picked up though. I say majority because it gave them the chance to get rid of the ones that rubbed them the wrong way or weren't meeting the standard. Chances are if you come over to get into any of the trades you'll start out as an spprentice. The downside is that you'll make less money upfront as you learn a trade. The upside is that contractors can charge you out to the customers at a cheaper rate which will help ensure that you stay busier. Additionaly is also helps to research what areas are least affected by the drowning economy. When things were tough on the East Coast it did't catch up to the West Coast until 3 or 4 years later. I'm not sure how Job Corp works but if you can choose what region you'd be in then it would be worth finding out what areas have the smallest unemployment rates in any of the trades before you commit. Keep in mind that the unemployment rate for a trade in a given area would likely reflect more journeyman level workers than apprentices.

You know it may be worth you searching recruiting websites and jobs in Belfast if that is where you are moving to at least then you will have the opportunity to make decisions from what you see advertised. Generally education is taken seriously in NI and regardless of the job people do or hope to do they either do a degree before getting work or work towards it once they are working.......... I moved from England in 2004 and at that time worked in Belfast ( in the education sector )and was really surprised that my team of staff all had degrees, not something that you would generally find in England for people there doing the same level of work.....so people do value education highly in NI. Personal advise, don't do a job because of better pay etc ..... do a job you will love, as you spend lots of time at work and if you love what you do it isn't like 'work' http://www.nijobs.com/ http://www.jobcentreonline.com/JCOLFront/Home.aspx http://www.indeed.co.uk/jobs-in-Northern-Ireland http://www.totaljobs.com/JobSeeking/NorthernIreland_l1659_t3.html
