Strengths and weaknesses of the United Nations?

Strength: It is representative of all sovereign nations of the world. It stands for and strives for promoting international peace and security. It promotes and involves itself in humanitarian activities and helps poorer nations to raise their standard of life. Weakness: Extra powers enjoyed by the Big powers. The much criticised one is the 'veto power' enjoyed by the permanent members of the UN Security Council. This had to be there as otherwise, in the circumstances prevailing at the time of its formation, it would have been impossible to bring them all under the organisation. In some cases the 'veto power' used had benefited the smaller nations. Another criticism is that it has no teeth, that it has no Army. It is made to depend upon units sent by willing member nations. Keeping a permanent Army will pose other problems, like an acceptable mode of recruitment and training and quartering and command.
