Does the United Nations General Assembly have any real "power" within the UN?

Why do these 5 nations have the power of veto in United Nations (UN)?

  • US, UK, China, France and Russia. Why only them?

  • Answer:

One may believe that all Nations being "United", all would have equal opportunity but that won't ever happen. Obviously these five nations are trying to regulate the entire world. The U.N. is a bunch of frauds really, if Prince Charles really cared about the environment he would have addressed the fact that China has had coal mines burning underground for the past 25 years or that China are among the leading polluters in the entire world. Russia should be doing something about Red China, and North Korea considering they're the ones that kept all the Asian Communists fed. France are snobs, and the British have bad teeth.

these were perceived as the 'powers' post WW2. the veto was an inducement to join. they wanted to avoid the problems that caused te league of nations to fail; most notably that the US never joined. as you can see, the WW2 losers : Germany + Japan didn't get a veto despite being more economically important than france.

Brandir

Because those are the original founders and 5 permanent members of the UN Security Council. When the UN was founded in 1944, it was decided that the US, UK, China, Russia and eventually France would be the five permanent members with Veto power. The Veto Power by these five was established to prevent any future action against the founding members (as happened to the Soviet Union when it was expelled from the League of Nations in 1939).
