What are some problems the United Nations are having to stop AIDS in third world Countries?

Superstitutions like someone mentioned of having sex with virgin to cure aids. The virus is passed down to the children. The people cannot be cured and as the disease takes a long time to take effect and finally kill the person alot of money has to be put into caring. Also, HIV cannot be prevented by washing your hands and having water (like say cholera) but involves changing ppl's sexual behaviour. The catholic church aren't exactly pro jonnies and i guess many people see a condom as taking away from sexual satisfaction or 'cheating' a woman or w/e.

The Catholic Church getting in the way.

The number one problem is this. The American (based) MNC drug companies want to sell their drugs and formulations, badly needed all over Africa at their usual unaffordable prices, keeping in view their expenses and banking heavily on the patents regime. This is, while there are alternate sources at 1/3 or 1/4 the cost, affordable in Africa, produced notably from India. Bypassing the patents regime is an extremely tricky business bringing in WTO and its laws too, in tow. The issue is whether to break the patent rules and save the lives or - I wouldn't say profiteering on human misery and poverty - to go by rule of law leaving the poor, dispossessed,disowned persons to fend for themselves. UN is helpless in this regard. It can do nothing short of producing the drugs by itself. Further, the voice of these MNCs is heard louder within the precincts of UN. Africa historically has always been the scene of such dire misery.
