How does the EU benefit the U.S?

When did the EU stop being a benefit for the UK?

  • I appreciate some will say never, that is not an answer. The UK did benefit but when do you feel the cost of membership out weighed the benefit?

    1975 or there abouts. Actually that was the start of the common market which lead to the union and that is when the failure of the system started. With history it is hard to say whether it is a benefit of hinderance to the UK, there is a lot of trade with europe - would we get it without the EU, but would we get more trade from outside the EU instead? I would say it worked when the EU was a club of similarly affluent nations (UK, France, Germany etc) but started failing with the acceptance of the poorer eastern european nations - the cost to bring them up to the affluence of the existing union has cost us a lot and the benefit is not there at the moment - we are getting cheap labout but the new markets can't afford the higher quality goods from the UK, so we are paying without getting sales back in return.

Haha think Scotland is thinking the same of the UK :)

Since we did not give into the Euro and control our own currency, the EU does the UK well. The Common Market was better because we could keep a grip on Immigration, but we had to welcome the eastern block countries in. As a group of countries we have the work force, space, raw materials to stand strong and with NATO there will never be a need to worry.

Back when it was the Common Market, that's about it to be honest. When it was all about trade. That's all you'll ever need it for. Now after accepting the poorer nations into it and then having it become the EU and enforcing migration has left countries in crisis, heavy debt and shambles. Either revert back to just trade or just ditch the EU. Nothing good about it. NOTHING. #Britons.
