How can US domestic oil drilling be explained as being good for the environment?

is drinking water bottled in France environmentally correct, NO. Why waste energy moving energy around the world. Have you seen some of the damage to the environment in underdeveloped parts of the world. Isn't it better to let us drill here knowing we will take care of our responsibilities. Security is an issue two ways. Like keeping terrorist at bay. What do think was was more damaging to the earth, the world trade center or exxon valdez. Humm, 3000 people died in one, versus 3000 animals. One is still a mess and that mess in Alaska is cleaned up. The second security is, do you realize how many people are dieing in Africa over oil, they make the middle-east look like a bunch of girl scouts.

Please let me tackle this question from another angle. I think it can safely be said that fossil fuels are mostly responsible for our environmental woes. Therefore drilling for oil anywhere in the world is destructive. ( as already stated ). As long as there are 'billions' to be made, you can rest assured that this trend won't change. The oil fields currently under research are getting much smaller, harder and thus more expensive to exploit. Don't expect pump prices to drop anytime soon. Peak oil extraction has passed some years ago already and thus I believe that this resource will run out in the not to distant future.Some people seem to think that this may happen in perhaps 30-50 years at current consumption rates. Our complete way of thinking must change towards renewable energies. Most oil producing countries import a percentage from elsewhere at a cost that's negotiated, but produce their own more cheaply and pocketing the difference. Again a trend, although good for the economy, unlikely to change. If money spend on oil discovery was spend researching better solar panels or batteries, building wind farms out at sea instead of oil-rigs or better ways to propel cars then that would be a step in the right direction. I believe that global warming increases at a parabolic rate and that at a certain point,the trends we are experiencing now, become irreversible. The time for the changes that need to be made is now !! Recently I saw a documentary on ice melting at the artic circle and a number of bordering countries looking to exploit the polar region for natural resources, specifically oil. I am very concerned and disappointed. These people have no concerns about rising sea levels (up to 60m is mentioned ) and it seems that it is not in their best interest to prevent global warming because the quicker the ice melts, the quicker they can start drilling for oil. The implications of drilling for oil anywhere are vast and by looking at alternatives you will ultimately reduce security risks as well as improove our environment. A healthy environment means less pollution therefore healthier waterways and oceans better air quality and of course a better and helthier life. Cheers.

It is not good for the environment, neither is importing oil. Drilling is not supposed to help the environment, it is supposed to lower the price of oil. Even if the oil drilled from new sites doesn't hit the market for another decade, it will satisfy the speculators and lower the price until we can find an alternative. One of the major arguments is, however, that with new technology, we can reduce the overall negative impact of drilling on the environment. Drilling here can also reduce the amount of energy we use to import and transport oil from other countries.

I don't think drilling anywhere is considered good for the environment. I think many think that drilling won't harm the environment. Drilling domestically could help the economy, but that will likely be a localized benifit. If we drill of the coast of Mississippi they will see more jobs, larger tax base etc. I don't think it could help stabalize the price of oil, but not bring it down. The only environmental benifit I can see is reduced transportation.

By drilling for our own oil here in the United States, it lowers our dependency upon having to import oil. It will improve the economy by providing jobs, and the more jobs we can provide here at home, the better our position to promote a healthier economy and get more off welfare. It will also improve our National Security here at home because it removes the risks of oil imports and it will help keep the nations strategic oil reserves strong. Once we have oil dependency, we can then look into and expand our alternative energy recources by building new infastructures to support those new energies.
