Any window facing the sun, south or east in the morning west in the afternoon, the curtains should be open so the sun warms the floor which in turn warms the room as soon as the sun light has left this room close the curtains. It wont actually save you much but if your really budget conscious it helps.

At night, the extra insulation from closed curtains helps retain heat. During the day, the added light enters easily thru uncurtained windows but does nor exit as easily and gets degraded to heat. Does "greenhouse effect" ring a bell?

Umm... I don't know what the weather is like in UK but this is what I think. If it's winter, I think it's best to keep the windows covered. Because the sun might be bright and all, but the cold air outside will most likely come in faster. Remember, It takes eight minutes for the heat of the sun to get to eatch, the cold is already there.

Windows that face south, will gain heat if the curtains are open during the day and closed at night, the rest of the windows should be covered because they lose heat all the time.

it depends on if the sun is bright during the day, but as for night, yes it does save on heat and helps to block leaks around windows.
