Why is recycling important?

Recycling... why dont councils put recycling banks on each road....?

  • Just wondering why dont the councils put a massive bank on each road for glass, paper, plastics, cardboard? then they collect it once a week? what are the problems of this? I dont ...show more

  • Answer:

because it would cost too much to out out that many recycle bins, and some people would just fill them with non-recyclabew rubbish. My local council (Rhondda Cynon Taf in Wales) has a great system, they give all households big bags for recycling stuff, we put out a bag for paper and card, a bag with glass, plastic & tins, and another with garden waste. these get collected every week, any Non-recyclable rubbish is also collected every week. I think this encourages recycling more than limiting rubbish collection to fortnightly

Some roads only have 2 or 3 houses in them, so it is NOT financially viable for some councils - especially the rural ones - the road I live in is well over a mile long and only has 7 houses in it, AND is split between two councils. Some refuse/dustbin men will pick the recycling up at the same time as the general rubbish collections. Some people take their recycling - newspapers/glass - to the supermarket with them when they go to do their grocery shopping.

Driving next to Lake Delavan in Delavan, Wisconsin USA, you will see large bins placed to collect old clothes and bedding. It doesn't seem like that far of a reach to put op those aluminum can recycling machines next to them and then to modify the machines to eat plastic bottles. Forget about the cash for cans idea, just give people the chance to do something economically friendly without having to go to extraordinary lengths to do it.

Why don't they just provide every household with a recycling container to put plastic, metal and paper in and then collect it from their house once a week? That is what they do where I live. In fact that is what they do at the last three places I lived.

It has been tried. Had a large rat problem .

Local authorities do not have a bottemless pit of money and cannot afford to supply every road and street in the country with a recycling bank. And there would be space issues to deal with as well, I doubt you would be very happy if they decided to park the recycling bank outside your door.

The Council empty these recycle banks once a week... I don't think so.

Because their not as worried about recycling as you think truth be known recycling is only good to a certain extent when you add the pollution of gas picking up a separate load for recycling and the energy used to break it down clean it etc. at a certain point it becomes counter effective there is only a certain percentage that can be recycled until that point is reached it doesn't work the same as producing stuff from scratch where more is better recycling is great to a point then we need to look at other options. the trucks to empty those bigger bins burn almost twice as much gas making the effectiveness go down that much more.
