Isuzu and Subaru are excellent. Ford has a couple of hybrids. Toyota and Honda have several different car/suv that if sized for the load would be good

yes - ox carts, hand carts, I think that all so called Motor sport, Air fly-over, Sport flying, and any other non essential use of fossil fuel powered engines should be phased out reduced or eliminated. Beach buggy, cross country motorbike, cross country leisure vehicles and such should be banned with the exception of army, police farm use.

i have some friends who live in Alaska and many people up there drive Subaru's Outback or Forester. i think they get around 30 mpg. (kind of on the low end of good mileage) or spend $30,000- $40,000 and get a hybrid suv

Last year I replaced my Jeep Cherokee for a Ford Escape Hybrid All-wheel drive. It has better than doubled my gas mileage and I couldn't be happier. After factoring in the price of gas and the tax credit, I calculated that within 5 years, the price to run it will be less than a conventional SUV. I would caution against some of the larger "hybrid" cars. Most that I looked at only got a marginal boost in MPG. My escape gets between 30 and 32 MPG. For me, it handles everything I needed - including the ability to haul a trailer if needed. It also worked like a champ in snow and ice this past winter. Good Luck!

Energy efficient? No. By definition it takes more energy to move mass up hills and on rough roads. Your best bet is to buy a diesel-powered truck or SUV. Diesels are more efficient then gasoline engines. If you want to be green, then you can use bio-diesel (vegetable oil). You need to make sure the engine is fitted for biodiesel, though. You need special fittings and seals, but I don't think it's very expensive. Here's a story about a military-style Hummer H-1 (is that off-road enough for you?) that can run on vegetable oil: http://hummer.off-road.com/hummer/article/articleDetail.jsp?id=415889

You may check out the Toyota Rav4 and Tacoma. They are all wheel drive, and Toyotas are known for getting good mpg.

There are quite a few popping up right now. The best I've seen recently is the Hybrid Mariner from Murcury; it gets like 34 and 30 mpg. Considering the regular V6 is something like 17 and 20 mpg it's rather impressive.

there's SUV hybrids - Toyota Highlander, Ford Escape (may be a hybrid Explorer coming soon), Lexus RX 400h, Chevy Tahoe (coming soon) Also, Subaru Outbacks (all wheel drive) don't get bad gas milage (mine's older--a '98 Subaru Legacy Ouback Wagon--and gets about 28mi/Gal), and Subaru is a "green" company.
