What are the benefits of recycling waste?

Of course! 1. We use up less of the earths finite resourses 2.Saves money, as we can resuse items 3. Saves the planet! 4. We learn to respect our planet

Back in the day..... Machines were built to last for ever. Then manufacturers realised that once every one had one... they ran out of customers. So.... they started producing things that needed replacing every few years or so. Thus forcing consumers to buy from them several times in their life, and therefore keeping their factories open and profits afloat. Great for commerce, but rubbish for consumers and RUBBISH to deal with when the old 'thing' doesn't work anymore. They didn't think of that... they just buried the rubbish in the earth (and still do). I don't think we should be recycling at all, I think we should be thrifty with the resources we have and make things that last for ever.

recycling benefits the Earth because we would be using less resources. For example, recycling paper reduces the amount of trees that are cut down. Furthermore recycling helps reduce energy costs and emissions that would likely contribute to global warming.

You get to feel better about yourself. But in the end, you are still making a value based judgment. For example, You value the plastic, created from petroleum distillation, more than the atmosphere. Because it takes a separate truck to pick up your plastics. It takes a separate facility to store your plastics. And yet another facility to refine your recycled plastics. Not to mention, all of the energy consumed in storage, shipment, and refinement of said plastic. Furthermore, you value the plastic more than all the other resources consumed in recycling that plastic. The copper, the steel, the plastic, the wood, the energy consumed in building these facilities (and how big is this carbon footprint on a milk jug by now) ? So all recycling accomplishes is: you get to feel good about yourself.

I am ADDICTED to recycling!! I just feel so bad if I don't. The reasons have already been stated I guess. It takes a while to really get into the whole recycling thing but, i'm glad i do now. Guess it just comes with age?
