Do you think the Global Warming Hoax Hoax is dead or do people think it's real?

It just seems like a lot of people have dropped anything to do with Global Warming since there isn't anything we can do about it. It's not connected to CO2 but water vapor ...show more

Answer:
Ah yes, another scientific illiterate who thinks they've figured out something that has eluded the entire scientific community for decades. Alas, it's not that easy. In reality the atmosphere is saturated with water. The only real way to increase the amount of water vapor is to increase the temperature. Which adding CO2 would do. Congratulations! You've found a positive feedback loop.

Some interesting numbers, but you list no source for them All the greenhouse gas (including water vapor) make up just 1% of the atmosphere. (4% is only in the warmer regions) water vapor is also pretty much fixed it can't grow unless the planet warms it will simply fall out as rain (as it does in the tropics) How much weaker it is as a greenhouse gas (pound for pound) than Co2 is in the fact that the planet is warmed ~30c by the greenhouse effect of that Co2 is thought to contribute (averaged) ~10% or 3c but by volume Co2 is far far less. The only people saying this is a hoax are deniers, and frankly they change the story they spin on this on a daily basis, it's scientists, it's governments, it's greens, it's communists, it's Al Gore, it's the Rockefeller's etc etc etc. What do the real experts say, scientists have not changed their minds they say it is Co2 caused by our emissions and to be honest I have seen deniers produce nothing real that even comes close to countering that. Deniers have now started to claim their are large groups of scientists who disagree with this theory, and they back this with anonymous web polls that anyone can post to, but none of these so called large number seem to ever appear in public, supposed they all feel really strongly about this but can't be bothered to show up at any science meeting and voice that. Odd given that the nature of science is to voice disagreement, when it exists, a large portion of the scientific community attend the AGU Annual meetings each year, a perfect place to voice such disagreement, yet over a number of years there has been no complaint, for the simple reason like the conspiracies list above the whole thing is just another denier fiction, there are no large numbers of scientists that dispute AGW, while it is very easy to see that a large number do support from the names and papers presented at that very same AGU meeting. Some people have certainly been sucked in by denier fictions, but look at the posts they put up here to see why, these are people already convinced of green plots or communist plots or government plots, people ready to believe anything that plays to their already established beliefs. "So what do we do now to stop pollution since man-made CO2 emissions aren't the culprit? Even if they were, there's no way to significantly alter the course by limiting industrial output ----- or is that the hoax hoax? It's all confused." I'm sorry but your statement is nonsense, if we are the cause then we most certainly can be the cure, what we have to do is reduce our output of Co2, we have technologies that can replace many of the worst of our emissions sources or at least solidly reduce them, Solar, Wind and geothermal are all well advanced and a lot cheaper than they were 15-20 years ago. Even simple things like burning wood as a part substitute in coal power stations (being trialed in Australia) as wood extracts it's Co2 from the atmosphere it is nowhere near the addition that coal is. The first of the all electric cars (from major manufacturers) are also starting to hit our roads. Many deniers whine that they are to expensive but in reality the first automobiles of over a century were vastly more expensive costing more than the average persons salary for several years, mass production and volume sales with competition drove the price down, as it will with electric cars. The confusion here are all the stories, theories and conspiracies deniers are trying to add to the pot, but then that is rather the point of what they are doing. While in the real world, sea levels are still rising http://www.aviso.oceanobs.com/en/news/ocean-indicators/mean-sea-level/ Glaciers are still declining http://climate.nasa.gov/keyIndicators/index.cfm#landIce The last decade is the warmest in the modern record (and denier try to claim cooling?) http://climate.nasa.gov/keyIndicators/index.cfm#globalTemp Arctic sea ice continues to decline http://climate.nasa.gov/keyIndicators/index.cfm#seaIce As Co2 continues it's slow rise now hitting 396ppm http://www.esrl.noaa.gov/gmd/ccgg/trends/ What do deniers counter with blogs, YouTube and fairy stories, I'm sorry but the ones putting out the hoax are all to easy to pick.

I'm sorry to say the man-made Global Warming HOAX is far from being dead. About two billion dollars of U.S. Taxpayer money is still being poured into this SCAM every year and of course worldwide it's billions more. The man-made Global Warming SCAM has already been around for more than 30 years. It has grown into an enormous industry. Thousands of jobs depend on this bogus threat being real. Bottom line is that this SCAM will NEVER die until all public funding is cut. We need congressmen with courage to get that done. Really the entire EPA needs to be abolished along with it. The only way that gets done is if the majority of people clearly understand that all we are dong is wasting money when we fund so called Global Warming Research. So spread the word and be sure to vote for people with the courage to DEFUND this whole gravy train operation. And watch these if you haven't seen them, they are very good. Well, what have you been smoking. It is clear that man made contributions to CO2, NOX, methane and Ozone have accelerated climate change. Interestingly enough you blame water vapor. In fact you have a point about water. A great deal of the man made CO2 is absorbed by the oceans and additional amounts bleed into the oceans via ground water and rivers etc. So the increased temp due to climate change increases CO2 released by the oceans which adds to the existing man made global warming which in turn releases more CO2 and this positive feedback loop continues. Wake up and pay attention to what is happening climate wise around the planet.

Okay, you've been around a while, so I realize you're not a new sock puppet pushing an anti-science line. I'll take your question seriously. You might want to clean up the syntax and such in your next question, though, because your main question contradicts your explanation. One wishes the hoax that human-caused global warming is a hoax was finally put to rest, but it hasn't been. The latest efforts of the science deniers sometimes sound exactly like you, however, in their claim that AGW is both a hoax and going away. And before I proceed, might I ask you some relevant questions, like where you live, what your science education is, and what do you get your news from? You are quite poorly informed if you actually believe AGW is either a hoax, or is going away. Where do you live, that you are personally not seeing any effects of global warming? They're even getting plants in Antarctica now that were carried there accidentally by researchers, workers, and tourists. Antarctica. See ref 1 Okay, for what reason do you believe CO2 is not a greenhouse gas? The hardware we use to write these words to each other is based on quantum mechanics. QM is the most accurate scientific theory we have, even more accurate than the theory of gravity. It predicts that CO2 is a greenhouse gas, and a very strong one. For you to be right, QM must be wrong, and it's been a central part of our physics since the 1920's. And it is pushing into relevance in biology now, as plants are apparently using some features of QM in photosynthesis. See ref 2 One area you might be having trouble with is just what differentiates H2O and CO2 as greenhouse gases. In general, infrared radiation affects the rotational and vibrational states of molecules, and this requires molecules made up of 3 or more atoms to provide the right energy ranges for IR to excite a molecule. You say H2O is 4% of the atmosphere, and CO2 is only 0.04%, 2 orders of magnitude difference. Well, 4% water vapor is about the maximum you find anywhere, and this is only found near the surface and in hot, wet conditions. Water is not "well mixed". It freezes out of atmosphere at a comparatively very high temperature, 0C or 32F. If you think that water vapor comprises 4% of the atmosphere from anywhere on the surface of the earth [eg: the Gobi Desert, the Sahara, the Mojave, the Namib...] all the way out past the international space station [where there is still some atmosphere, which creates drag, which is why the station has to fire its engines every once in a while to get back up into the orbit they want] you are very wrong, and have greatly overestimated the amount of water in the atmosphere.. Water crystallizes and falls out of atmosphere. It is completely a follower of temp, it never leads temps. CO2, methane, other greenhouse gases, deforestation, they are all culprits. But for right now, CO2 is still the main culprit. [And if you are religious, pray it stays that way. If methane overtakes CO2 as the primary greenhouse gas, our goose is not merely metaphorically cooked, we'll be cooking our oceans, farmlands, and cities, too.] We have actually been measuring this for a while now. [See NASA GISS, NOAA...] Do you honestly think the governments and all major scientific bodies that find human-caused global warming is real, is visible all around us, and is getting rapidly worse - do you think they all lie? That's a mighty big conspiracy. Don't forget that many churches also "believe" in AGW. Are they all part of the conspiracy? If we could cut our CO2 emissions by about half, we could probably level off the rise in CO2, since about half as much CO2 as we produce each year remains in the atmosphere. If we could manage a decent way to remove some CO2 from the air, we could stop the warming a lot sooner. There is a great deal we can do, and most of it is better than trying to adapt. It's really tough to adapt to extreme weather events coming more and more often.

Water vapor is feedback that increase as warming increases, further amplifying warming. It is the largest greenhouse gas by far. That is correct. However, that does not mean that CO2 and other gases are inconsequential. That is just a fallacy. Reducing other CO2 and gases will reduce the amount of water vapor that can remain in the air, further reducing warming. That is because warm air can hold more water vapor than cooler air (for example, dew falls once the air cools down to a temperature here the relative amount of water in the air is about 100% - it precipitates out). That is why reducing CO2 is important. This may help you understand how these silly arguments are used and why they are false (the video has nothing to do directly with AGW, but the same arguments are often used).

The hoax is far from dead. As the temps and sea level are not rising as fast as predicted, alarmists are concentrating more on "extreme weather" and now "sustainable development" to fleece taxpayers out of their money.
No, I don't think it is either a hoax or dead. I believe that as the research and data has advanced that the media hysteria has died down and other issues-primarily economic-have taken over the headlines. It is apparent that the predictions are starting to get a little more consistent, although they are still pretty wide-ranging and there is a lot that science does not know and that is impacting policy decisions along with the campaign by vested interests to discredit the research and theory itself. Politicians are attending to the issues that will keep them in power and undermine their opponents, especially with elections approaching and Global Warming is not among those issues at the moment. Alarmism and Denial among the general population is harder to gauge; there is still a lot of misinformation out there thanks to the sad state of education, with many people who have little formal education in the sciences basing their opinions on the over-hyped news, blogs and internet forums both pro and con on the theory of AGW. Although there still seem to be plenty of pop-eyed conspiracy theorists out there who are politically motivated, it seems as if there is a lull in their activity, possibly as a result of the more general agreement that average global temperatures are indeed rising. Perhaps the conspiracy theorists are looking for a new way of gaining traction since conspiracy theories cannot explain the weather anomalies we are experiencing globally...but one never knows, there is not a conspiracy theory conspiracy that I know of. And there are fewer pictures of cute polar bears on floating blocks of ice with teary-eyed celebrity voiceovers urging us to adopt polar bears, bring them into our homes and feed them. With our arms, legs and heads. Personally, I haven't seen convincing evidence that man-made CO2 emissions are not influencing climate or a rational analysis of the impact limiting emissions might have on it. Nonetheless, and for many good reasons other than Global Warming, alternative energy research and development continues to advance and it does seem that new sources of energy not reliant on fossil fuels and other environmental initiatives...the most effective way of dealing with any potential impact of mankind's activities on global climate...are developing without a cohesive, world-wide policy aimed at mitigating the still-unknown outcomes of AGW. Obviously, not as fast as those who are alarmed would like. I find these developments intriguing and hope markets and costs come down soon enough for me to take advantage of them in my remaining lifetime-solar panels so I can generate my own electricity without a huge electric bill every month, energy-efficient and renewable sources of heat that don't rely on expensive LP gas during the cold months, higher-mileage trucks and automobiles that are both cheap to drive and FUN. If that helps mitigate mankind's impact on changing climate and buys us time to adapt-which is what alternative energy is-I'm good with that, and I really can't quite see why some people still object to it so strongly other than their political loyalties lie with leaders who are mesmerizing them with sound bytes, buzz words and catch phrases designed solely to gain and maintain power over them. I agree that it is a confusing time.
