Cons of protecting endangered species please?

I suppose one Con might be that the effort, time, and money involved in saving a particular species might detract from and take away resources that could otherwise be applied to a "bigger picture" such as saving an ecosystem itself. For example,saving a wetland itself could be more important than worrying about an obscure member of that wetland ecosystem. That is just a thought I had, not backed up by a source. By the way, saving a wetland such as one within the Louisiana coastal region, could be very beneficial to the economy, because a wetland is known to reduce the severity of flooding when there is a strong storm of some kind. You could probably find some source material on that by looking into The Nature Conservancy (nature.org).

the problem isn't w/ protecting certain species, the problem is ost of the time the libs and treehuggers knee jerk a 'solution' w/o considering the consequences. ie, a small animal is 'protected' around a oilrefinery. suddenly, they infest everything and the natural preditors can't keep the population down and then they end up starving to death, much worse than any other alternative.
