In Australia despite wide held believe a Park Ranger is not something you'd most likely get into. In Australia Rangers are predominantly about education, policing, and need to have skills in mechanical works. You'll most likely get jobs in land conservation agencies (there is a wide range of jobs you could do here), also a wide variety of agencies (water, parks, wetlands, fauna, flora, coastal, alpine etc etc). You'll find that you'd probably specialise in an area too. So that may limit your options or define your career path. You find there are jobs in regards to sustainability (in urban environments too), jobs with local governments (enviornmental or nrm officers). In Australia there are also Catchment Councils and NRM groups you could work for. Then there are the mining companies and consultancy groups. A lot of that would be more environmental scientist work, taking measurements, doing assessments etc I studied forestry and can pretty much be involved in any of those jobs (bar the coastal management, which is very specific). Forestry also gave me the advantage of being involved in forests managed for products. I now work for a consultancy undertaking water plans (drainage, water use, environment, floods) and sustainability reports for new land developments. Previously I have worked for a local government as a GIS officer, a state agency as a project manager for reserve creation and forest production.

Take a look at your state website under DEP. Check out the jobs open and that should give you a good idea what kind of jobs are available. You can even contact the DEP and inquire directly. Good luck.
