People hate being told what to buy. The solution, I believe, is better public promotion. I'm dirt broke but I buy these bulbs, not just because they're so efficient, but also because the quality of light is better.

I agree with you. If it cannot be produced cheaply, Govt. should give subsidy by removing taxes, excise etc. for the sake of enviornment.

Environmental value does not drive price. Cost of manufacture does. Once the CFLs become more popular, the cost per unit will drop. Even now, I can get 30-watters (equivalent to a 150-watt incandescent) in one of the dollar stores near me. How much cheaper do you want a bulb that can last for a decade or so and save you money all that time?

Humans are naturally greedy. This works two ways. 1. the people that make/sell the cfl bulbs are not going to sell them for cheap, because they want money! 2. People want to spend less money, and dont give a darn about the environment. or it could be 3. Your too poor to buy the cfl bulbs, which is happening to alot of people in this economy. I agree with the other posters. The government should really have a tax subsidy.
