Ways to save money on the energy bill.?

  • Me and my family need to cut back off of the energy so we've decided to do whatever it takes to save as much as we can. We have replaced every light bulb with the energy saving bulbs ...show more

  • Answer:

With most homes using 30% of energy heating water, a very restricted use of heated water is needed to minimize energy. Install a 5 litre water heater immediately beside the kitchen sink and over insulate it. Repeat this for the bathroom. Have a switch to turn off each of those heaters when not in use for prolonged periods. Turn the main water heater off long term. The 5 litre capacity of the water heater limits use of heated water in either kitchen or bathroom. People can learn to bathe with only 2 litres of warm water. This is far less than what people ordinarily use to shower. But leaving the heater switched off between bathing times saves the most. Candles are a bad choice. You can use a LED crank powered light instead, that is far safer, does not pollute the air or coat the walls and ceiling with wax residue. Use a few LED marker lights to keep the house navigable without a flashlight or candle. Use mostly white walls and ceiling so that light is not absorbed, and to prevent heat from escaping in heating season. It also reduces heat penetration during summer heat. To keep the building comfortable use venetian blinds to let in or keep out the sunlight as needed. In hot weather, run a fan in the window during the coolest part of the night, or better yet run a bathroom fan to take air from close to the ceiling and shove it out of the building. Keep the roof space ventilated properly to avoid overheating in summer, and to keep the insulation dry in winter. If your building is surrounded with blacktop, cover the blacktop with light colored sand to reflect summer sun. Pile that sand up so that the blacktop absorbs heat in heating season.

candles cost more than electricity. If only need a little light, like that from a candle, use a 5 watt bulb.

Paint walls of rooms white or bright. Use dimmer control or rheostat / variable resistance to control brightness of table lamps. Cut short the route and insulate hot water pipes. Power saved is power produced.

You have to start thinking S-M-A-R-T. What kind of cutbacks can you make? For example: I drink bottled water. Now at $1 a bottle on something that covers over 65% of our planet is not smart. So I bought one of those water filters that screw into your faucet. I have bottles that I refil over and over again. I take them to work. Do you have a lot of small appliances around that house that are always on? I cut my electronic bill almost in half by unplugging all the clock radios and night lights. I also bought some of those florescent bulbs that look a lot like a regular bulb. These things use 80% less electricity than regular bulbs. You would be surprised, but these small things add up. I know I was spending money on the water filter and energy efficient bulbs but these things will pay for themselves in a month providing they pertain to you. If you really need the money right away start cutting back on your food costs. Romain noodles cost a dime and they taste just as good as campbells chicken noodle that costs $130 a can. Ok no chicken in romain noodles, but you are probably just missing about 4 tiny pieces of chicken. Put a brick inside your toilet 'chamber'. You will use a little lesser water each time you flush..Before you know it you will be ahead. Wanna be creative? Find yourself leaving lights on? Buy a motion sensor switch, the lights will turn on when you enter the room and will turn off (by a set amount of time) when you leave the room. I have one, they cost $15 at HomeDepot. Need new windshield wipers for your car? Who says you have to buy 2? You only need the new one on the drivers side, leave the old wiper on the passenger side. So remember you have to start thinking S-M-A-R-T! Yours truly seahorsehawrey.

There are some excellent ideas here already, so I will be brief. Refrigerators use plenty of electricity. If you have one, make sure you keep it full and keep the seals clean so they do not seep air out. If it has a heat exchanger on the back, keep that free of dust and cobwebs.

few more tips 1.use self luminous reflector they absorb energy in day time and reflect in night select on luminous points 2.your house should be designed as per 'VASTU' norms i.e north east entrance, south west bedroom, kitchen in east etc 3.grow plants specially creeper around the area where you need a/c 4.if air speed sufficient use small wind mills to lift water and to run your car on compressd air ,you can also cool down your surrounding by using small sprinkler system

BTW, If you are going to use candles regularly you may want to switch to soy candles since the paraffin ones can really effect indoor air quality in the winter. By saving energy I assume you mean electricity, water, and gas or fuel. Something you may want to consider is to go with a solar water heater. They are coming down in price and are pretty easy to set up. It is a first baby step for solar anyway. I see you are into burning a lot. If you have a fireplace, do not use it! Not many people truly appreciate how wasteful they are. Use a chimney balloon or something to plug the flue so the heat is not escaping while it is dormant. You also may want to consider water collection barrels for your gutter spouts for the summer anyway. They are surprisingly handy if you use water outside. Also, get your furnace vents wrapped or at least tapped with aluminum tape. You will be amazed how much warmer furnace heat comes out of a vent when you do this. If your basement is unfinished this is a DIY project.
