What can the government do for the environment?

Is the Philippine government doing enough to save the environment? If not, what can they do?

  • Answer:

We do not need the government to tell us to save the environment. We are already experiencing this extraordinary, unusual extreme heat that's engulfing our metro. Governement keeps telling us---'SAVE THE TREES!"; but what do insensitive people do? They cut the poor trees! What is more saddening is that cutting the trees cost money.... money that may be used to feed the hungry... money to plant more trees... Some people try to play demi-god and think that what they do is good for the people... As they say, "it will grow back anyway... in two months..." Sirs wake up! We need the tree shades now... and not a few months from now! Sad... terribly sad .. Tsk, tsk...

St. John Bosco church is where my family and I go to church every Sunday. And like your concerned citizen who reported this, we were surprised and angry to find what happened to those trees! It was an awful scene. That portion of of the church (the parking lot) was a beautiful place, shady, peaceful, and cool anytime of the day. We usually spend a few more minutes outside our cars to talk to other churchgoers while waiting for other cars to go out of the parking lot. This is because it is impossible to go out of that place right after the mass, because everyone are hurrying up to go to the exit. Now that those trees are bald, trimmed, and brutalized!, everyone will go directly inside their cars after the mass, and spend a lot gas idling while waiting for their turn to go out. Whoever is responsible for that act on those hapless trees, should be seared! By the way, why is it always the government? why would the cutting of these trees be the government's fault? I am so sick of this thing blaming everything to the government... Government are compose of people, like us. Its now becoming a good excuse for each and everyone of us to blame everything to the Government and sit around and do nothing because we have the government to blame. I say you MOVE, act, and do something! So the question maybe should be, what have you done and should do?

Saving the environment although highly beneficial to mankind cost lots of money to implement. Philippines at this point can't even feed and house it's people adequately so sad to say that helping save the environment in the Philippines is not of high priority at this point.

NOT MUCH REALLY HAS BEEN DONE, otherwise thousands of hectars could have been reforested already, plus the hundreds of smoke belchers that they failed to discipline or apprehend, VEHICLES LIKE THESE SHOULD NOT BE ON THE STREET MAKING PEOPLE SICK AND MAKING THE PLACE DIRTY.....

I haven't read DENR's law about this. But I hope that we learned our lesson last year with ondoy. Plus please i do not want to feel the same summer weather we are currently experiencing today.

Our government officials are undeniably just looking on the things that would benefit THEM more... Condominiums pay taxes... Trees don't.

I am afraid all Govts. in that area are felling large tracts of rainforest to make way for the growing of palm oil which is an additive for cooking in western cultures. Along with Brazil that country is felling 20 football fields a month to grow palm oil and beef cattle for McDonalds. This country and others who have rainforests are clear-felling the earths oxygen supplies, without oxygen and the trees that convert carbon-dioxide into oxygen can only lead to more green-house gases in atmosphere thus causing more planet severe storms and droughts

I would like to revert the question "What have you done for our Environment? If none, what can you do?" Say for example, two-three days after Ondoy last September, what do you see in the streets? litter everywhere! Jesus Christ! The Government can only do much, this issue is more of our responsibility as living person in this planet, if we continue to throw cigarette butts, plastics, do not segregate waste, does not plant trees in your backyard, even share our knowledge with regard to this issues to the young and older generations, nothing will ever happen.

The first link below refers to how Bernarditas Muller was dropped from the delegation from the Philippines to the Copenhagen climate change summit last year. So many would argue no. But it is doing somethings, as the second link shows. The question is if it is enough and as noted, dropping a vocal critic of the way some western nations tried to drop out of the Kyoto agreement suggests that not enough is being done.
