  Yom Kippur did not originate in Jerusalem. It actually originated after the Jews performed the sin of the Golden calf. Moses broke the commandments when he saw what they did. He than went back up onto the mountain to pray to G-d that He should forgive all the Jews for the sin. 40 days later G-d forgave them and told them that this day would forever be a day of forgiveness. that was the first yom kippur. Ashkanazi -btw- actually means German in hebrew. Those that are Ashkanazi can trace their family back to Germany or the areas surrounding it. The reason that Jews don't eat anything on Yom Kippur is not as a form of punishment, rather it is so that we don't concentrate on food so that we could concentrate on our prayers instead. This day is a completely spiritual day and we dont want anything physical to get in the way. Instead there is a commandment to have a large meal before the fast begins. One does not watch TV on yom kippur, nor are they suppose to do anything to just past the time away. Yom Kippur only comes once a year and on this day it is decided who will live and who will die. One does not take that day with a grain of salt. It is actually a very serious manner and should be treated that way. On Yom Kippur Jews do not only atone for murder (after all I hope most Jews have not committed murder in the past year!) rather they atone for all sins. They range from speaking evil about others, giving bad advice, having inappropriate thoughts, stealing, not treating others nicely, scoffing at what the rabbis and the Torah says.... There are lists and lists of things that Jews are instructed to use as guidelines to think of anything that they might have done wrong in the past year.
