    The singular prayer of Yom Kippur is the "Al Chet", a recitation of a formal list of sins and omissions. It is said aloud, in unison, so that nobody need know which sins any individual is actually atoning for, and also as an expression of *group* responsibility for the sins of the individuals. Traditional Jews thump their chest with their fist at every sentence. Usually this is done gently, symbolically, but I remember as a child seeing older men really "beating their breasts" in expressing their repentance.
