What's the proper Yom Kippur greeting?

What is the greeting for Yom Kippur and at what points do you wish it and stop wishing it?

  • I have Jewish friends and I would like to be respectful and to be proper. I guess I don't know what Yom Kippur is!!

  • Answer:

You could say have a good fast to them....but you not being Jewish can just say Happy New Year to them, that was ten days ago and it is called Rosh Hashanah. The correct Hebrew and traditional way would be to say Shana Tova.Yom Kippur is our high holiday of atonement. We go to Synagogue and we pray and fast ,we also reflect on our errs and wrongs. Your friends are indeed lucky to have a friend like you who respect them enough to learn something of their faith.

Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, occurs 10 days before Yom Kippur. There is no greeting specific to Yom Kippur. We wish each other "Happy New Year" or "Shana Tova" (the greeting in Hebrew). As a gentile, you would not be expected to offer any specific greeting, but a cheerful "Happy New Year" is always well-received.

You should say "Gemmar Chattimah Tovah," which (loosely) translates to "May you be written in the Book of Life." You stop wishing it as soon as Yom Kippur is over. Yom Kippur is only 1 day - it's on Sept 28 this year. Yom Kippur is the Day of Atonement. For more info, see http://www.jewfaq.org/holiday4.htm

Yom Kippur is day of atoning for sins. Happy New Year is nice, and so is Have an easy fast. After Monday night, the New Years' festivities are over.
