Do I need to bring my own prayer book on Yom Kippur?
-
I've just started university and I plan to attend services at the Chabad on campus. Do I need to bring my own prayerbook? I cannot read Hebrew very well unless it is transliterated.

Answer:
If your prayer book is transliterated and you feel comfortable with it, then bring it. But the Chabad prayerbook has Hebrew/English prayer books. I bring my own because i have mine marked with post-its and everything because during prayer at home i always post-it so i won't have to search for one page! EDIT: Just remember in a Orthodox service: -Be very modest. Wear a knee length, loose skirt and long sleeves. Black is appropriate. NEVER wear bright colors. Especially Red. -Go on the right side. Orthodox services seperate women and men. So make sure you are on the right side. Its a Chabad Lubavitch, well Orthodox custom to avert your eyes when walking pass the mens side when they are in prayer. -Be respectful. To blend in, turn off your phones and don't eat or chew any gum during Yom Kippur. I said Gum because many chew gum on the sabbath to pass the time so their stomach would't growl until Shabbat lunch. But this is a fast day. If you have any questions, please ask!

Firstly, Chabad is the place to be, good choice. Yes there will be prayer books provided. You will have a very uplifting services. I am Chabad myself, and will be conducting the Yom Kippur services in Cork Irelnand, and we do provide prayer books.

Ooooh! No, you shouldn´t need to bring your own prayer book. They are usually supplied by the shul. Especially since you wouldn´t be on the same page, etc. I would hope they would provide transliteration for people like yourself. They surely realize there are plenty of people joining them that don´t read Hebrew all that well, but it would be a great idea to learn and practice some more when you get the chance. Orthodox/Chabad service? Probably going to seem REALLLY long to you! I go to my Sister's shul and about die! (they're conservative). You may be a bit surprised if they seperate men from women...and don't go trying to shake anyone's hand of the opposite sex. They don't do that at Chabad. I made that mistake once, not realizing where the guest rabbi had come from, until I glanced down and saw his tzitzit. :O

You should bring your own. I like to write notes in mine about what I want to pray for and what the prayer is talking about. If your not really comfortable with the prayers, you should skim it before you go. They dont always have prayer books available that are transliterated in the synagouge, and there might not be enough. Bring ur own.

B"SD I am an Orthodox Rabbi. No you don't have to bring your own Yom Kippur Siddur. The Shul should have them. For sure they should have some. Just know that there is a lot of standing and a lot of prayers and the services are long. The Shul's Yom Kippur Siddur is in both Hebrew and English.

as a christian i can't really help you - in my church we provide books for people and some have their own. if you can't read hebrew it probably wouldn't matter unless they use english. if there is a rabbi there how about contacting them and asking all the things you want to know. another option - check out with any other jewish students you may know. do not be put off of participating in the observance.
