What can you do on Yom Kippur?

Can i fast a day early 4 yom kippur?

  • The problem is this year yom kippur falls on homecoming for us, and we have alot of food related activities. So is it possible for me to fast a day be4 yom kippur, after all, you ...show more

  • Answer:

No no no no no no, you can't. The time zones don't matter. The time of fasting is mandated by the Bible--G-d was kind to us, so we have 25 hours instead of two days. Homecoming is great, but there will be other dances. Yom Kippur only comes once a year--if you observe only one thing a year, let it be Yom Kippur. How much does G-d ask of you besides for that? He gives you dances throughout the year. Whatever you choose, I hope your choice brings you peace inside.

Hey Dan - Maybe its time for a different sort of homecoming....? Call your friendly local orthodox rabbi, and ask him to get you something to read that can make yom kippur meaningful for someone who's just never really had a chance to know what its all about. As someone who grew up less observant, I can assure you, if your knowledge of what yom kippur is all about was even 10% of what you know about homecoming, you wouldn't even have a question.....

No. It's Yom Kippur or Homecoming. Take your choice.

No No No.Because in Torah people acually fast for both the 9th and 10th of Tishrei. But Hashem was kind enough to care about our health. So its a mitzvah to eat in the morning and afternoon on the eve of Yom Kippur. You should fast on the 10th only. Not both days.Plus that really isnt an excuse because i am going to a party which starts right before Yom Kippur ends. Its a secular party so i am breaking my fast there.Acually Hashem knows everything,so he knows where you really are.But hey good trying.

You can atone any day you want. It's OK. :)

NO, the point of yom kippur is to sacrifice, not to enjoy homecomming and eat your self into a food coma.

Daniel, this must be a very challenging test for you. In reality, there is actually a commandment to eat and drink Yom Kippur eve so that we will have strength to fast on Yom Kippur, itself. Our sages tell us that one who seeks to purify himself, G-d will help him. Show G-d that you want to do the right thing, pray for Divine Assistance, and He will help you. Good luck and have a meaningful and easy fast. (You might want to check out some interesting thoughts, videos,... for Yom Kippur at www.aish.com)

daniel- religion should be a personal thing. what you do is what you do. no one can tell you how to be a better jew or what you're doing isn't jewish enough. At the end of the day you have to live with your actions, so it's up to you to decide. Personally I never have had to face such a dilema on Yom Kippur so I cannot answer out of expirience, but, should you make the effort to fast early atleast you are still making an effort. that is quite commendable. if you eat on yom kippur you certainly will not be hit with lighting or smote in any way...additionally you probably will not be thrown into a lion's den..though there is precedent for like named individuals... good yontif.

No, i'm sorry but, also you still would have to fast because the fast is 25 hours. This means probably you will have to miss homecoming.
