How much do you usually spend for Thanksgiving dinner?

I'm cooking thanksgiving dinner this year for the first time, for about 15-20 people. I have no idea how much I will be spending. I put together a grocery list and it doesn't ...show more

It varies. It would be hard to tell you without knowing what you're cooking. I stock up on a lot of staples, like I usually have big bags of flour and I grow herbs and home-made stock in the freezer. If I'm fully stocked on stuff, my bill can be significantly lower. If I'm not well stocked on things, or if I decide to make a lot of specialty stuff, the price can really get up there. The way I do it is I set my budget first-- then I make make my menu. If my budget is low, I avoid dishes that require 15 different ingredients, or specialty expensive ingredients like saffron or wine. I try to work within the budget I have. I might trade things out; like instead of sausage-stuffed mushrooms (expensive) I might make devilled eggs or quiches (much cheaper) for an appetizer if I find my budget strained. I also take pressure off buy trying to buy some things well in advance and setting it aside; canned goods or spices, etc-- things I can pick up and keep in the cabinet. THe specialty T-day stuff, like turkeys, I buy when the sales hit.

Since it's usually just me I have no idea. But you have to understand that it depends on where you live, and where you go shopping. Such as Tom Thumb is the most expensive grocery store around as opposed to Wal-Mart for all of the ingredients that you still have to cook yourself. Look at the ads and compare what all the stores are charging for the components of the meal.

i spend about $3 for gas to drive to the homeless shelter and eat a delicious meal. :)

My father and I order the prearranged meals from Marie Callender's. We are only 2-4 people, so we get the meal for about $90 for everything including pie and coffee. You can order bigger meals for more people for about $200. I think that is a better deal than buying all the items and making it for Thanksgiving, plus you know everyone will enjoy the food. There is also a promo code available online.

None, I'm British. Americans celebrating thanksgiving is the equivalent to Germany celebrating Holocaust day.
