First thanksgiving meal, what should I do?

  • Okay, this is my first year making a thanksgiving meal. I am making a turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, turkey gravy, corn, candied yams and a apple pie. I have no idea in what order ...show more

  • Answer:

make apple pie the day before - if you like it warm, put in the oven after the turkey is out, turn the oven heat off, the residual heat will warm it while you eat the day: make stuffing wash, clean and stuff turkey - take out the neck and giblets package inside the turkey - season inside before stuffing prepare turkey for oven - truss it etc. cook turkey - note cooking time - baste frequently, during cooking process while turkey is cooking - peel your potatos and yams and then cook them, separately - cook about 1 hour before turkey is ready cook corn close to serving time remove turkey from oven and let it rest for 20 to 30 mins - remove the bird from it's cooking pan and then carve it - remove stuffing before carving while turkey is resting - use pan drippings to make gravy after you remove the turkey from oven, you can turn down oven to 140F and put your side dishes in the oven, in oven proof dishes, to keep them warm the more you do ahead the easier the last minute rush to get everything to the table is - get someone else to carve the turkey, it frees you up to get everything else done set the table before you cook the veggies, if possibel - I even load my coffeemaker so I just have to flick the switch when I sit down to eat Good luck and Happy Thanksgiving

The thing you should do is check out the link below. It has a listing of all the Thanksgiving helpline numbers you could want. Maybe print it out in case you have troubles. Also there are links to a lot of sites that have great recipe ideas in case you want to do some research before you cook!

I always make my pumpkin pie or apple pie the night before and put the pumpkin pie in the fridge and let the apple pie sit out I also make my deviled eggs the night before. I cook my turkey and when it is about 30 min almost done I make the rest on the stove top

Be very, very careful with stuffing. It's far smarter to make it outside of the bird, thus making it dressing, than to risk a) salmonella or b) old, dried out bird from trying to get that stuffing to a safe temperature. Seriously, make it outside the bird, and just get it plenty wet, since it won't soak up moisture from the bird. Remember, newlywed, that if the gravy's hot and the cranberries are cold, then everyone will love the meal. Oops! You'll need to put cranberry sauce on the table! Otherwise there will be no color to your meal at all! Use the canned store brand; it's all made by Ocean Spray!
