What do psychiatrists do?

How do psychologists/psychiatrists determine if a certain behavior is considered an illness or not? Are there objective rules or guidelines or is it just compared to what the society deems normal?

  • A broken leg is pretty obvious to see and the flu is probably also rather easily identified as an illness (I assume, not being an expert). But what about behavior traits? Is it a question of what society accepts? Are there many borderline cases? Have previous "mental illnesses" now become "non-illnesses"? Are there cases the other way round? And why? How do you know if a kid is very active that this is just, you know, the kid being a kid? And when does ADHD start?

They have manuals in his mind, if somebody have a number of signs then they believe that somebody havee a disorder, disease, etc. There is no exact rule, but if several docs (3,4,5…) say the same then there is no doubt for them. But a better opinion is from a psicologist.Their diagnostis aren’t based in clinical test, for it they aren’t completelly fiable. If i believe that someting is normal for you and my family isn’t affected, then you can continue with your behaviour.Sorry I don’t know about ADHD.
