What are some good starting songs for my small jazz band?

If you're at all serious, buy a Real Book (make sure you get the same volume, I'd say volume 1 is a good start). If you're not familiar, the Real Book is a collection of 300+ jazz standards- basically classic songs that A LOT of musicians have done recordings of. Basically what you'll find in it are the "heads" (the main melodies), and the chord progressions. You'll need to get it in the right key (i.e. C for piano and bass, Bb for trumpet and tsax, and bass for trombone). Introduction to bebop might be tough. Bebop is one of the toughest things you could play. There are a few songs in volume one of the real book that are bebop though. The only one that I can think of right now is confirmation and that's a REALLY tough progression and melody. It would definitely be worth it though. There are some really good classic songs in it. Songs like Take the "A" Train could be good to start out on. -- Feel free to shoot me an email if you want any more advice.

Jazz , as a style is very precise when you are playing it. Be careful of what you are playing. Because most people want to play jazz but end up playing blues. Although blues is a fundamental of jazz , Blues and jazz are two different things. With the kind of instruments that you have suggested , to start with , Autumn leaves is a good song to start with , as it is a common hunting ground for improvisations for all jazz lovers , not only beginners. Listen to the original Autumn leaves song , and then some of the improvisations by various artists and you are ready to roll. Talking about bebop. Bebop is also based on jazz and blues , only thing that it is way to complex then them. So i would suggest you master jazz first and then move to bebop. For sheet music you can log on to www.my-piano.net. Although i am not sure whether or not you will be able to acquire "jazz" sheets over there. Good Luck ;)
