  • Answer:

Head to your local shop and try out a Squier bass. They are an outstanding bass for the money, but the quality can be kind of inconsistent. (Avoid the "Affinity" models) That's why I suggest playing one in your local shop as opposed to ordering one sight unseen online. The sound is classic Fender that you've heard on literally tens of thousands of jazz & blues records. That's a great place to start, and you can always upgrade in a few months/years once you get more into bass playing and really know what sort of sound will suit you. Also, always check the papers for used instruments. Sometimes great deals can be had on good basses.
