What is a good mouthpiece for person beginning alto saxophone?

  • I'm 32 and I've played the guitar and bass for 10 years, and a little bit of clarinet when I was young. I have a Yamaha YAS-52 alto ( I don't know how good this horn is), ...show more

  • Answer:

For beginning, just start on a stock piece (the ones that come with horns), such as a Yamaha 4C. Unfortunately, there are little to none in-between mouthpieces, there are the stock ~$20 mouthpieces then the ~$100 pieces. It is important that you learn on a basic piece before getting a professional piece because picking the right professional piece for you requires tediously trying many different ones, and deciding the best one for you will be easier if you know at least the basics of playing. http://www.wwbw.com/Yamaha-4C-Tenor-Sax-Mouthpiece-461275-i1142762.wwbw

I would suggest a Selmer S80, with a C* opening. It's the perfect mouthpiece to start out on for the majority of people. I would look around for a used one in good condition (people usually sell theirs if they start playing non-classical music) as theyre about $100-130 USD new. I bought a used one for around $50, to give you pricing ideas.

A dealer will help you with this. Don't get an expensive one because you don't need one yet. There are a few diff types and sizes and lays around. Just get a student mouthpiece or get the original one from Yamaha. Then I'd go out sell the Yamaha and buy a Selmer.
