What's the difference between a precision bass and a jazz bass?

What is the difference between jazz electric bass & regular electric bass?

  • i am trying to purchase a bass and i see some people playing a jazz electric when i want the 5 string or 6 string electric bass for rock pop, latin music.......can anybody elaborate???

It seems that jazz bass players are pretty happy with 4 strings. One big difference in sound is that jazz players often use "flat wound strings" instead of "round wound strings." This gives a warmer, smoother sound on the electric bass which is more comparable to the sound of a stand up bass.

I think it's the "feel" man. I'm not really sure. Test both of it first, whatever catches the "feel" go for that one. The only difference is you get higher octave notes for the 6 strings. So, I don't really know man. Hope that helped. :)
