What is a good alto sax mouthpiece for both jazz and classical?

Alto sax jazz mouthpiece?

  • I'm 15 and i've been playing the alto sax for about 6 years Is there a special kind of mouthpiece that i can get for playing jazz music?

  • Answer:

Mouthpiece does play a role in sound. It's the best thing you can do to change your sound aside from getting a new horn. For a jazz sound, I would suggest just a metal mouthpiece. They have a pretty bright sound (which can is good for leads) and they allow a lot more ease in bending notes. However this does mean that you'll have to work extra for intonation.

The mouthpiece is not the secret, they are pretty much standard. The reed strength makes the difference in your music. I will use a medium- soft reed for any Jazz type music, while using a hard or extra-hard reed for parade style music. I have played the Alto, Tenner, and Barry Sax for 30 yrs now.

No, all mouth pieces should be the same. It all depends on your song and the skill you have in blowing into it. Just practice, and you'll become fluent. You can also try a tenor sax if it's not working for you...
