What's the first thing to do with my new alto saxophone mouthpiece?

    1.Soak the reed in warm water for about 7 minutes. A dry reed won't vibrate. 2. Place the flat part of the reed on the underside of the mouthpiece, a little part of the mouthpiece should be showing. 3. Put the ligature on the mouthpiece. 4. Do not put the mouthpiece on the sax, put the mouthpiece in your mouth, lower lip on the bottom teeth, inhale and let your stomach expand and exhale using your diaphragm to force the air out. Keep manipulating the mouthpiece till you get a sound. It will take time. If you can get a sound with just the mouthpiece then put it on the sax. 5. If you can't get a sound with just the mouthpiece, soak the reed again or do a search on YouTube. Making a sound is a combination of the correct size mouthpiece, reed and embouchure. i've been playing clarinet for 6 years and sax for 5. i had trouble at first too. what helped me was one of my friends told me to make a "ta" sound into it. first for your embrasure you need to do a tight smile then place your mouth piece about a half inch in your mouth and then pull in the corners of your lips. thats how to get a good position. and make sure your reed isn't too far down. it needs to look like a trimmed fingernail. just a sliver of mouth piece showing above the reed.

well...if you just have the mouthpiece with out the saxophone then you have to blow really hard and you will get a high pitched squeaking sound. I have played saxophone for a while and sometimes just blow into the mouthpiece to get the squeaking sound when I am bored. it will hurt your lips after a few minutes though.
