Garrett: The Gibson Byrdland could be used for both metal (hard rock, at least- Ted Nugent plays one) and jazz (James "Blood" Ulmer, for one, has also made use of the instrument). That being said, luiface, I would, if I were in your shoes, go with Garrett's suggestion to you of saving up just a bit more and going for an Epiphone Les Paul. It's probably the best compromise, so to speak. edit: SOULMATE- My Byrdland comment was to Garrett, not luiface. As you can see (although, apparently, you couldn't), my suggestion to luiface was to go with what Garrett suggested, that is, the Epiphone Les Paul. Just another Y!A liar.

Those two genres are kind of on complete different sides of the guitar spectrum. Jazz uses hollow-body or semi-hollow bodies and metal uses solid-body My suggestion would be buy a model based on the Fender Strat or Gibson Les Paul The Strat is the most versatile guitar ever, but is a little jangly so not the greatest for jazz The Les Paul has a darker, creamier tone than the Strat. A lot of metal players (Randy Rhoads, Zakk Wylde etc.) use Les Pauls and Gibson does have a good history with jazz (Wes Montgomery used a Gibson L-5) and they aren't jangly guitars. So I would go with a Les Paul based model (Not the actual Gibson les paul because those cost a beast-load) And just to say, you won't find much variety under $200. So if its possible you should wait until you have about $350-$400 and get an Epiphone Les Paul. They aren't fantastic guitars, but I still like them
