What's the difference between a precision bass and a jazz bass?

Fender Jazz/Precision Bass?

  • What's the main difference between a Fender Jazz Bass and Precision Bass? (ie sound quality, etc...)

  • Answer:

They are not that similar. Precision has a fatter punchier sound. The Jazz bass has a longer neck which accounts for more Bottom on the low notes. The Jazz has a bit more versatility soundwise compared to the Precision bass.

They are very similar. The price is about the same. They have identical hardware (bridge, tuning pegs). The difference is the body shape and the pickups. The Jazz has separate tone knobs (one for each pick-up), the Precision only has one tone knob that controls both pick-ups. The Jazz therefore might have a slightly wider range of tone, but that's about it. they are both beautiful basses.

In my opinion, the Fender Jazz Bass has better sound quality and string quality. If you're going to buy a bass, I'd pick the Jazz Bass over the Precision bass. Like I said, that's just my opinion. A Precision Bass player would probably come along and give you a long list of what's better about that bass. It all depends what you want from the guitar. :) -Cyn
