Answer:
As long as it's jazz, nothing wrong with the Ricos. I went back to 'em years ago myself. As long as it seats on the mpc, and isn't worn out they works just as well as anything. You'll spend almost exactly the same amount of money per hour of playing time regardless of what the label on the box is. And I for one don't feel quite so bad throwing out cheap reeds when they don't work. As far as mouthpieces go, I usually steer towards the Meyer HR 'pieces. Something around a 5M or 6m. Easy to control, and they do a lot more facilitating than dictating. it's a good thing. But that 4C you have is BASED on the 5M. Have a repair guy open it up to about a .085 tip opening. Shouldn't cost much, and a replacement shouldn't be a big deal if something goes south. ] Putting the work in and learning to play the horn will always do you more good than trying to buy your way to competence.

What's your price range? If you want a great high quality pro level mouthpiece, check out the Theo Wanne line. I have a Kali, and it's amazing. Coming from a C* (about the same tip opening as a 4C), it was a pretty significant jump since the smallest size is a 6, but I was able to play fine when I went down a half step strength reed. Unfortunately, these pieces are going to run you $495. I'll be doing a review of this mouthpiece on my site, if you want to check it out (link in sources). If you want to spend around $100, check out the Selmer S90 190. It seems to have a warmer tone than a C*, and I prefer it to my C* for jazz.

I have also been playing alto for 3-4 years. For regular band, I use a yamaha 4c with vandoren zz jazz reeds but i use 2 1/2. For jazz, I use a meyer 5m with vandoren zz jazz reeds also size 2 1/2. My jazz director loves it, and it's very comfortable to play on once u get used to it. I highly recommend it
