Swing and jazz question?

I have a Jazz Band audition tomorrow and I need help? Swing scales and straight scales?

  • Tomorrow I have an audition for my school's Jazz Band and I have a question: - what is a swing scale? I know that the pattern is 1 &2 &3 &4 but I don't exactly know what that ...show more

  • Answer:

The notes are the same in both scales. The only difference is that you play the notes straight in one, and you swing the notes in the other. If you don't know what it means to play swing, then you have no business auditioning for a jazz band.

So lets take one bar ("-"=a subdivision) 1---2---3---4--- (1e&a2e&a3e&a4e&a)sixteenth notes Now straight eightnotes 1-&-2-&-3-&-4-&- Now one bar in a swung style(triplet feel; beats are divided into triplets, not sixteenth notes!) 1--2--3--4-- (1&a 2&a 3&a 4&a) Now swung eightnotes 1-a2-a3-a4-a Jazz music is written in strait form like eightnotes, but played swung like the later example: Written: 1-&-2-&-3-&-4-&- Interpreted in jazz band: 1-a2-a3-a4-a That's the best i can do on a keyboard; hoped this helped

Play eighth notes as if they were written as triplets with the first being on the down beat and the second on the third triplet Regular scale: 1&2&3&4& or 1te2te3te4te Swing:1(rest)le2(rest)le3(rest)le4(res... Also in swing, try to play as much legato as you can and accent the upbeat slightly think of it as dooBAHdooBAHdooBAHdooBAH

Listen to Cannonball Adderley..As he played eighth notes, he would play full, even eighth notes.....the next step is to slur from an up beat eighth note to the next down beat eight note without shortening the down beat eight note(the natural tendency is to make the down beat eighth note short...almost staccato) DO NOT DO THIS!...The next step is to put an accent out the up beat eighth note...Let me see if I can explain the sound in words. As you play normal eighth notes they would sound like this(doot,doot,doot,doot.,doot,doot,doot... Now in playing jazz one must first make the sound as this (doo,doo,doo,doo,doo,doo,doo,doo..1+2+3+... slur from the second up beat "doo" to the next down beat "doo" and do the same from the fourth doo .slur to the next down beat doo ) See if this explains it better 1+slur2+slur3+slur4+slur to one of the next measure. Now put accents on all the up beats. Write out an "F" major and a "G" major scale..each one octave up and down as eighth notes, then write in the articulations as I tried to explain. The next thing would be to buy Rythyms by Bugs Bower and pub byChas Colin
