maj.7's, min.7's, dominant chords ie. .D7b9, D9, D13, It depends on the song your writing. Check the notes in your melody line.

I have to disagree with some of the answers here. Without giving you a"progression" in a particular key, here's chords you will have to master to play any kind of traditional, not smooth, or pop jazz: minor 7ths major 7ths diminished half diminished 7ths 9ths 11ths 13ths and you need to know inversions example: Gmaj7 (G,B,D,F#) 1st inversion (B goes on top, and you find the rest of the notes in any order that makes sense to your positioning). 2nd inversion (D goes on top, and you find the rest of the notes in....etc). 3rd inversion (F# goes on top, and you find....etc). -I hope this helps.

Do you know your jazz blues progressions and rythym changes? For blues : try in "c"...c69, f13, c69,gm9 to c13,f13,fm9, c69,em9 a13, dm9, g13, (c69 a7flat 9, dm9 g13)--turn around...1 measure between comas.....rythym changes are the chords to Geo Gerswhin's I've got Rythym...also try progressions that move in 4ths or minor thirds...A lot of jazz tunes are written on the blues and rythym changes.
