Are Metal Mouthpieces good for Alto Sax?

What are the advantages of playing a metal mouthpiece on an alto sax? ?

  • I'm fairly new to the saxophone and was wondering what the difference is between metal and rubber mouthpieces for the alto sax

  • Answer:

I switched to metal on my alto several years ago; I started with a Berg Larsen (which was very nice) then switched to an Otto Link 6star which is even better. But bear in mind that it depends on the sound you prefer. I'd suggest listening to lots of sax players and take note of the sounds you like.

I'm not an expert, but the metal mouthpiece gives a louder, brighter sound - I think

No advantage. All metal moouthpieces suck for Alto. unless you are able to get Jody Espina to make you a custom metal mouthpiece then you cant find a good one. I used to play on a custom made mouthpiece hand chisled by Bobby Dukoff himself. I thought it was awesome! a few years later i played the Jody Jazz hard rubber and fell in love. I suggest you get a Meyer 5m, Vandoren 6S, or a Jody Jazz hard rubber 5m.
