  • Answer:

You should play the tenor sax.. it has a much nicer tone, and you get to play more solos in jazz band. But you never know when having an alto around might come in handy, so don't give it up forever.

I personally prefer alto, but it sounds like you prefer tenor, so go with that.

Hi, there is no scientific answer to your question...I believe the great reed players play or have played them all at one time or another..The principle is the same except one is a Bb horn and one is an Eb horn; one is higher or lower pitched than the other...Some jazz is hipper high up in the alto range. And some jazz sounds sweet in the bass or baritone range..Colrane, Parker, Woods, Aderley, Mulligan, Getz I'm sure do or did play all or at least gave them all a good shot before settling on the one which turns them on the most...There's no way to call one more jazz sounding than another..It's what you make it do..Of course, if you encounter a reading situation which calls for, say a tenor, then you'de have to pass if you only have been playing, say, baritone..,

If I were you, I would maintain both alto and tenor. They're both wonderful and chicks love the guy who can play two different types of saxophone in jazz.
