What kinda of guitar would be good for jazz?

What are some good jazz guitar brands?

  • I've been playing guitar guitar for a while (mostly rock and blues). Now I'm learning jazz and would like to know some guitar brands that will help me get that smooth sound.

    Trey's advice that sound is shaped by the player more than the gear is absolutely right. I disagree with Trey quite heartily re Fender guitars tho; they are not a typical jazz guitar sound. The classic jazz guitar sound is a hollow-body electric guitar, usually (not always) with humbucking pickups. Semi-hollowbody guitars or "thinline acoustic" guitars like the Gibson ES series are also most definitely great jazz guitars. But there are great jazz players who use solidbody guitars too. For example, Clint Strong and Steve Erquiaga both play Les Pauls and they are GREAT jazz players with GREAT jazz sound. Which brings us back to Trey's original point. It's the player not the gear. But yes, some gear is definitely more suited to making certain sounds than other gear is.

Keep in mind that most rock, pop, and blues players are paid to play and endorse the brand that you see them playing, just like Tiger Woods gets paid by Nike to use their stuff. But jazz guys tend to play whatever guitar that appeals to them. Of course, there are some exeptions (like George Benson/Ibanez).
