  • Answer:

Fletcher Henderson - Variety Stomp (1927) Ethel Waters - Am I Blue? (1929) Fats Waller - Ain't Misbehavin' (1929) Louis Armstrong - Potato Head Blues (1927) Bessie Smith - St. Louis Blues (1925) Bix Beiderbecke - In a Mist (1928) Hoagy Carmichael - Stardust (1927) Duke Ellington - Black Beauty (1928) Jelly Roll Morton - King Porter Stomp (1924) George Gershwin - Rhapsody in Blue (1924) King Oliver - St James Infirmary (This was released in January 1930, so just a few weeks out. Link in source.) I'm not sure if all of these were played at parties or public gatherings, but composers such as Hoagy Carmichael and George Gershwin probably were, along with singers like Al Jolson and Bing Crosby.

Obviously... anyone should mention the Charleston. It was the dance craze of that decade! But, there were other great tunes from that era. Tiger Rag, Avalon.... Jelly Roll Morton was out then. Muskrat Ramble is another great New Orleans tune. It was the earliest jazz age... and sadly, people don't listen to that stuff as much any more.
