Jazz is sleazy and sneaky, just like a detective. Thus, it would make sense that jazz is often played.

I wondered that myself! I think it's because most detective movies were dated around when Jazz music was becoming popular. Plus, they'd always be in dark alleys and whatnot (don't shoot me-I've never seen a detective movie before. Going off of stereotypes here!) and there would be Sax players on the street/in coffee bars I guess?

probably because it evokes a certain mysterious mood... Imagine if ska or reggae was used in detective movies... it would be difficult to take seriously.
