Heavy Jazz Music Help?

I want to develop appreciation for the Jazz Music. Can you help?

  • I know nothing about the Jazz music or it's history but recently was fortunate enough to listen to some soft Jazz music of Dave Koz, Spyro Gyra, Eric Drius, Marion Meadows, ...show more

  • Answer:

"Real Jazz" is relative. Everything from ragtime to fusion can be considered jazz. I personally consider swing, bop, and hot jazz in general to be "Real Jazz'. Charlie Christian, Django Reinhardt, Benny Goodman, Satchmo, Duke Ellington; they're all major figures in swing. For bop, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Art Blakey, Clifford Brown, etc. will all be fine. Many of the above cross between bebop and swing, because bebop swings! Stay away from avante garde jazz, you'll probably just be alienated by it like so many people are (Monk falls under avante garde...you might not 'get it' at first). Avoid the really complex stuff at first too. Swing, and gypsy jazz in particular, will be your best bet. Give it a shot!

Instrumental.... Charles Mingus 'Black Saint and the Lady Sinner' 'Oriental sax turkish and arabic music' cd with various artists- I love this one! http://www.amazon.com/Oriental-Sax-Turkish-Arabic-instrumental/dp/B001OTM6QW

I agree totally with Ron, The Miles davis is a nice touch, but i suggest Benny Goodman (clarinet) Gordon Goodwin, Charlie Parker, Dizzie Gillespie (trumpet), Go out right now and listen to Sing Sing Sing with Gene Krupa. The clarinet feature in that is Benny Goodman. He has such a great way with entering each solo. Buddy Rich is a great drummer. On Youtube also listen to The Big Phat Band, great jazz. Struttin with some barbecue By louis armstrong. I also enjoy listening to blues. Blues correlates to jazz. you will find most jazz has tons of blues. Or listen to a jazz radio station.
