How do I keep timing when playing jazz piano?

    I hate metronomes. I believe you absolutely HAVE to get the basic temp into your body somehow. I tend to bob my head in time with the beat, or click my teeth (probably not good!), or just sway your head very slightly from side to side. Some people like to tap/stomp their foot. Somehow you have to hear/feel that beat going in your head and especially in your body. Try slowing down your runs, one hand at a time, and gradually speeding them up to tempo to see if that helps. You can also tap your knees while you sing/hum an improv to yourself, or play the drums on the table while listening to your favorite CD. PLAY WITH A METRENOME, AND RECORDINGS. WHEN IMPROVISING, TRY AND PLAY BEHIND THE BEAT, ALMOST AS IF YOUR TRYING TO CATCH UP. THIS WILL GIVE YOU A MORE SWINGING FEEL. YOU'LL START TO GET THE FEEL BY LISTENING TO HOURS AND HOURS OF COMBO JAZZ.

When you practice jazz with a metronome, set the tempo for 1/2 of the speed of the quarter notes. For instance, in 4/4, instead of having it click on every quarter note, have it click on every half note (or every other quarter note). So if your tempo is 144, put your metronome on 77 and consider each click to be count 2 or 4. The count would be 1-CLICK - 3 - CLICK and gives a strong sense of a backbeat. This will help you relax and pull back your tendency to rush.

Practice with a metronome and it won't be long before you will be able to 'feel' the music. Also a good tip for keeping your rhythm up with odd meters is to break it down into two's and three's. For example, for a 7/8 time signature, count it like: 2+3+2 onetwo onetwothree onetwo onetwo onetwothree onetwo onetwo onetwothree onetwo Really gets drilled into your head.
