Well, I would have to recommend either a Conn Connstellation 52B or a King Silver Flair. I play a Connstellation and love it. I tried it against a Strad and a Vintage One (Conn's top model) and I liked it much better. It is a .463" so it is a big horn and does take more air. The other horn, the King is one of the most popular horns in my area. I have never played one, but I know several people who do and love them. One of the other answerers suggested a Bobby Shew Xeno, I recently tested one the Bill Chase Xeno and hated. I thought i twas too small and had a stuffy sound up top. I also have tested Strads and I personally don't like them, but that is just me. Prowinds.com has really cheap 52Bs as well as Silver Flairs. Although the Conn is just a little over a thousand, it is well worth the money. Pro Winds lists the Connstellation as an intermediate horn, but Conn calls it a Pro.

go getzen, superior valves, awesome sound, lifetime valve warranty you cant go wrong i bought a lightly used getzen and i couldnt be happier, the 700 series runs you about 900-1100 bucks and is well worth the money and will last you until you are old and grey. ~ian

If I were you, I'd skip the intermediate horn and go straight to the pro models. Check Craigslist - I saw a Yamaha YTR 6310Z - The Bobby Shew horn for $900. I've played the Shew horn and it is fabulous. Check eBay too.

http://www.musiciansfriend.com has the Bach TR200 for around $1,200. That's what I play, and I like it. (I have both a small bore and a medium bore). My brother plays a Bach strad. (but I don't know the exact model). There is also E-bay. You might get lucky and pick up a Bach strad. in good condition for $1000. .
