Cecil Taylor: Unit Structures Practically anything by Sun Ra, but if you can find the Live at Montreaux set from the 1970s, you'll like it. (I think it's been re-released on CD). Killer version of "Take The A Train" Anthony Braxton is great, too.

Not as way out there as what's listed so far, but I found Medeski, Martin and Wood's The Dropper album pretty far out enough for me: Joe Zawinul's solo stuff I've always considered avant garde, but I doubt it's categorized as such.

Consensus from many jazz experts says that Eric Dolphy's "Out to Lunch" Album is one of the best. I actually own this album, but I am not into Avant Garde. So I can't give a personal recommendation. The only reason I have "Out to Lunch" is because it is a classic that makes my jazz collection more complete.
