Ooops. Sorry Freya. Verve is ALWAYS at the top of my list. Another would be Blue Note.

Personally, I like Blue Note. They have a very good variety of the old school and also the new school.

I've bought some good sounding old stuff from a brand called Quadromania, by Membran Music, a German company.

Try the columbia legacy and concord jazz records.

That depends on what you're into. different labels have differently motivated musicians and producers. The Prestige label has a lot of music that is similar to what Verve was recording. They might even be the same label, just under a different heading. I used to know who owned each company back then, but I haven't needed to recall that for a long time. If you're into the verve remasters of the 1940's era, then you might like like some of the Blue Note albums of the 1950's. They call them the Rudy Van Gelder series. Rudy was the producer of the classic Blue Note albums that were recorded in his studio (which was his parents house in the beginning) in Englewood Cliffs, NJ. There have been a lot of classics recorded there by Rudy. Personally, I suggest the Impulse Label recordings of the 1960's-1970's. Impulse was a very foreword looking label. The idea was not to put out albums that fit a recipe for jazz making, but instead to trail blaze the way music was created. Their most famous artist was John Coltrane. For recent stuff, you can check out the Verve artist Kurt Rosenwinkel, he is creating ways to play music, and I love to listen to his albums, personally. Fresh Sounds has put out a series with a lot of great music. Its called the Blue Series. Their mission statement speaks about blending existing style of music to create a new jazz. Time Berne, John Ellis, William Parker, Craig Taborn, all have great albums on that label. You won't hear music like it on the radio, unless you listen to WKCR, anywhere.
